Edinburgh Marathon

May 27, 2007
Well, Meg and I made it round - and now we understand how difficult it is to run a marathon! Twenty-four hours later and we're still struggling up and down stairs and trying to not look too odd hobbling around Glasgow!

I came back - after slowing severely for the last six miles - in 3hours 46minutes, and Meg put in a grimacing sprint-finish to get home in 4hours 11minutes.

For me, it all started well enough. The first few miles I was putting in good times and looked ok when I saw Iain, Zoe, David and Dad at eight-and-a-half miles. The wind was in your face by this time and that didn't improve until around 16 miles when the route went back on itself.

I was feeling a bit sickly by halfway but carried on at a good pace, feeling comfortable. But round about 18 or 19 miles I really began to struggle. I was still running ok but couldn't get any quicker. In fact, as we got past 20 miles I was definitely slowing down. The last five miles changed from 8.30 miles to 10minutes plus. I kept convincing myself that if I just jogged one more mile then I could walk, but managed to do this every mile so I did run the whole way, I'm pleased to say.

Meg did too, and was probably only so far behind as she had a bad leg and hadn't done quite as much training as me. She wisely took it a bit easier at the start and kept going.

We're pleased to have done it, but at the moment we don't intend signing up for another one... ever!

Thanks to everbody who has sponsored us so far. At the time of writing we are only £50 away from reaching the £1000 target so please go to my JustGiving page and sponsor us if you haven't already. Thank you!

Official results will be on the Edinburgh Marathon website when they get around to it.

It's almost time...

While the blog has been lagging behind, the training has been going at full pace. Well, nine-minute miles at any rate. We made it up to around 22 miles a couple of weeks back when we ran down the canal from the West End of Glasgow to Balloch on the shores of Loch Lomond. That was really hard work and the last five miles seemed to pass so much slower than five miles normally would; it gave you an idea of how big a task running over 26 miles actually is.

However, we got through all the long runs and are all set to go on Sunday. Kick off is at 9.30am (I think!) so I should be done by 12(!). OK, 1 or 2pm maybe. My dad and Uncle David will be there to watch, as well as Iain and Zoe and no doubt a good few faces from Bella, so it will be good to have some encouragement along the way.

And on another note, Meg and I have done 10Ks as part of our training in the last couple of weeks. I got a PB of 41.28 at Troon and Meg ran 46 minutes in the Women's 10K in Glasgow. Only four times as far and we'll be in the last couple of miles on Sunday! Wish us luck...
